A Unique Pairing

Blending Historic Charm with Modern Conveniences

After fire tore through the Johnstone-Sare Building, we took the opportunity during the rebuilding and renovation to incorporate many modern conveniences and accessibility features throughout the building. We now have the rare designation of being both an accessible wedding venue in Oklahoma and an historic venue listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We’re proud to be able to welcome all of those who wish to attend and share the joy of your big day. Accessibility features include a wheelchair-accessible elevator and ADA bathrooms on each floor of the building. Keep scrolling to review our full Accessibility Statement. We invite you and your loved ones to visit our event venue.

“This is a gorgeous facility and the staff were very helpful and accommodating in helping us set up for our film shoot. The bathrooms and elevator were all very helpful for our event.”

Accessibility Statement

The Refinery at The Johnstone-Sare Building welcomes all guests. Our complex in downtown Bartlesville Historic District consists of two buildings built in the 1900s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After the destruction by fire in 2009 the complex was rebuilt with accessibility standards in mind. However, removal of all necessary physical barriers for accessibility is not readily achievable as such removal would threaten or destroy the historic significance of the property.

Features for those with limited mobility:

  • All points of egress/ingress within the building are a minimum of 36″ in width and all doorways between rooms are a minimum of 34″ in width, all ramps are 1/12 pitch in accord with ADA.
  • All common areas, event spaces, and public restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
  • The building has an elevator that’s at least 52 inches deep and doorways at least 32 inches wide.
  • The Johnstone-Sare Building complex has access on grade to an elevator core that is ADA compliant, the elevator exceeding ADA requirements and being the first electronic elevator permitted and installed in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Elevator service goes to all floors of the complex and the roof.
  • All public restrooms contain either an ADA stall with appropriate grab bars, or free-standing toilets with appropriate grab bars.
  • All public restrooms have roll-under vanity or sink with waste and supply insulating jackets for protection.
  • All smoke detectors are commercial with strobe lights.
  • Over 15,000 square feet of reproduction hexagonal pure porcelain tile with a high coefficient of friction has been installed in the complex for high traction and decreased incidence of slipping.
  • Handicapped parking areas are located to the east of the building complex, and a ramp up to the sidewalk is maintained by the City of Bartlesville.

Physical barriers include:

  • The lobby doors have a disabled thumb pull latch, but the doors do not have a remote-control button and there is a slight difference in grade crossing the threshold. These two things combine to require “an assist” on entering or leaving the building.
  • The ADA-compliant 1/12 pitch ramp that connects the two buildings ends in a classified “assist” step down to the hallway on which the hotel apartment rooms are located.

We work to ensure every guest who wishes to visit can do so regardless of their physical abilities. Among the ways we comply with ADA:

  1. We ensure that individuals with disabilities can make reservations and visit during the same hours and in the same manner as individuals without disabilities.
  2. We have identified and described the features of our venue in detail to allow individuals with disabilities to determine whether it meets their needs.
  3. Guests with legitimate service animals as defined in the ADA will be provided access to all areas of the property afforded to those without service animals.
